Keep the comparison attached to the intended Result, rather than silently replacing it with Total.
Choose endpoints deliberately
Difference highlight compares the selected valid endpoints. Both Results with data show their difference. A generated Total participates only when selected as an endpoint; total highlighting retains its own behavior.
- Enable Data behavior → Treat nulls as zeros.
- Set Difference highlight → Missing Result behavior → Show difference to zero.
- Choose the intended Result endpoints and label style.
- If the closing category is absent from delivered data, enter its name in Closing Result name (optional).
Example: Cash EOP is blank
When an opening Result is 50 and Cash EOP is missing/zero, the requested closing difference is −50. The missing closing Result can be displayed as zero, with the arrow and label directed to it. It should not use a generated Total as an automatic substitute.
Blank versus absent category
A received blank has an identity the visual can retain. An omitted, unknown dimension member cannot be enumerated by the visual. The configured Closing Result name provides a fallback without turning on native Show items with no data.
Other valid comparisons remain
The missing endpoint policy affects that comparison. Earlier valid Result/subtotal differences and explicitly selected Total highlights remain available. Source amounts, running balances and prior subtotals are not rewritten.
Review missing-result settings
Configuration-only native chapter. The supplied example contains Net income; no absent closing-result case is demonstrated.

- Name the closing result — In Difference highlight, review Missing Result behavior and set Closing Result name to the exact intended category, here Net income.
- Review null handling separately — Treat nulls as zeros is a separate Data behavior option. This capture still contains Net income at 5.71M; it does not demonstrate a missing endpoint.
